Do you have a sacred space that’s just for you? A space that brings you tranquility, a reprieve from the outside world, & connection? A space that feels like a deep breath when you enter into it?
We all need a sacred spot that allows us to connect with our inner self, the Divine & beyond. A reminder that we are not alone. It brings us power & connection to all that is.
What is a sacred space?
A sacred space is one between the worlds, a spot that is not just a physical place, but one that exists on the spiritual plane as well. It will help you in your magickal & spiritual practice.
You might have a spare empty spot in your basement that you’re considering turning into a ritual space – but just because it’s available doesn’t make it the best spot for you to use. Consider things such as lighting, environment, & traffic patterns when you’re selecting a sacred space. If that corner of the basement is right next to where the furnace is going to kick on, & you can hear the sump pump slogging away nearby, it may not be a great idea. Try to find & utilize an area that feels welcoming & comforting.
My sacred space is a non-negotiable aspect of my life. It’s a part of who I am, it’s my connection to Divine energy.
Your sacred space will give you something to look forward to during those crazy moments during the day when you feel like you’re about to lose your shit. And it’s truly a non-negotiable… We NEED it to be healthy, whole, & happy. When you create a place in your home that encourages quietness, it will call out to your soul “Come, sit & listen.
I have a few sacred spaces. One is actually just my nightstand, another is the top of an old trunk! Each space holds a specific purpose. My nightstand is where my crystal grid, crystals & stones & angel communication tools & items live, the other is my Wiccan altar (which changes with the Wheel of the Year).
My next venture is an outdoor space. An outdoor sacred space can be amazing & powerful. If you live in a climate that has changing seasons, you may not be able to use your space during inclement weather. Your outdoor space may work well sometimes, but not all year long – so have a backup plan in place!
One you find the area you want to create your scared space, the first thing to do is completely clean it out. You don’t want it to be junky or a place where random things are tossed. I like to rearrange my altars & spaces in alignment with the Moon cycles, this keeps the energy flowing so the space stays feels peaceful. Clutter messes with you physically, mentally, & spiritually. Make sure your space is clear & feels light.
The next step is to smudge/cleanse the area, clearing the space of any old & stagnant energy. There are many energy-cleansing techniques you can use, I love the combination of Sage (white or black) & Palo Santo wood, it makes a powerful cleansing combination when burned together.
Emphasize the importance of the environment as a place of solitude. Decorate with curtains, beads or a screen. This is YOUR sacred space to receive inner guidance & knowledge as well as to write, draw, paint, chant, play an instrument, or simply listen to your inner guidance.
Set up your altar with spiritual objects to bring in the energy of spirituality. Each object can be placed with an intention for going deep within your heart & soul. Creating an altar can be as simple as draping a small table with a special fabric. On top of the table, place items such as a scented candle, incense burner, essential oil diffuser, or natural objects like rocks & seashells (bring in the earth element). You can place a symbol of your religion or spiritual practice as well. Perhaps you’re drawn to stones & crystals (is there anyone who isn’t??)…When choosing crystals for your sacred space, always look for stones that resonate with your spirit, don’t overthink it!
Add plants & flowers for energy, color & inspiration. For Mabon I decorated my altar with pine cones, acorns, oak branches, sunflowers & wheat in honor of harvest. For Samhain I add pictures of loved ones who passed, angels & items that honor my ancestors. To impart a feeling of peace & harmony add pictures of loved ones, angels, mentors & anyone you wish to connect with in your journey.
As you create a sacred space, you might like to consider these questions:
- What’s the theme of your space?
- What mood do you want to evoke?
- Will you use any altar or centering table?
- What objects, such as cloths, paintings, photographs, rocks, branches, flowers, or candles, might enhance the theme?
Your sacred space is the perfect place to ask for guidance, connect with the Divine, journal & create positive visions for your life. As you refocus on your inner life, you’ll find yourself calmer, clearer, happier & more inspired to follow your heart.
May your scared space connect you to all that you are a part of & may it bring you an abundace of love, light & peace!
Love & light,
