Balancing Your Chakras: Day 1 – Root Chakra “I AM”

The Root Chakra, also known as the 1st chakra, governs the survival instinct, our physical energies, giving us a sense of security & safety with ourselves & other people. The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is considered to be the most important chakra, because it connects us to the Mother Earth, to the Universe we live in, to our physical world.

The Root Chakra is associated with the following functions or behavioral characteristics:

  • Security, safety
  • Survival
  • Basic needs (food, sleep, shelter, self-preservation, etc.)
  • Physicality, physical identity and aspects of self
  • Grounding
  • Support and foundation for living our lives

When this chakra is balanced, it’s characterized by a strong security feeling in your world & the feeling that daily tasks are easy to do. When your Root chakra is harmonized, you have the feeling that you are working with the Universe, not against it. In my opinion, when this first chakra is balanced, you understand the famous “Law of Attraction”, you understand “Synchronicity” & you start to attract positivity into your relationships, money, health & career aspects.

Every chakra has the ability to be in balance, to be over-active or under-active, depending on the way the energy flows through the chakra.

An over-active Root Chakra will make you may feel anger (seeing red), annoyance & even aggression towards events & people around you, you feel as if you “have no patience”. Another frequent feeling for over-activity of this chakra is greediness. Controlling others is a wish, & those who challenge your “authority” are considered to be a threat. You need to fill the lack of the secure feeling with something, so, there you are, becoming dependent on the security of your job, someone around you, or you start to feed a habit that makes you feel secure & safe. As a result you become a rigid with wide & strong boundaries. Materialism is another sign of and over-active Root Chakra.

An under-active Root Chakra may give you the feeling that you are disconnected from the world around you, even from your body. The feeling of the missing of organization accompanies you everywhere, attracting chaos. The lack of focus, fear, anxiety do also characterize an under-active Root Chakra.

Characteristics common to those with a blocked root chakra are:

  • lack of focus
  • co-dependency
  • restlessness
  • feeling abandoned

Physical signs can include:

  • sciatica
  • hypertension
  • impotence
  • colitis
  • eating disorders
  • prostate issues in men

Common non-physical signs of blockage include:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • fearfulness
  • guilt
  • resentment

The Root Chakra primarily governs the reproductive organs & lower extremities, including the lower spine, legs, and feet. The chakra blockage will often replicate itself manifesting as constipation, kidney stones, circulatory issues, & leg weakness.

How to Balance the Root Chakra

While meditation does connect you to a higher spiritual plane, it also serves to ground you. You may not always be able to trust that the world will give you what you need to survive, but connection to your higher self and trust in a power higher than yourself will give you what you need to feel safe.

Anchoring Yourself In Your Environment

Developing a harmonious relationship with your environment is key in fostering safety. How you feel in your immediate surroundings, from your home to your neighborhood & region matters in supporting the first chakra balance.  It’s important to connect directly to the earth. Go outside and walk on unpaved paths, dig your hands in the earth, plant seeds… These are all examples of personal connections with the earth element that will support the opening of the root chakra to a more grounded, sustainable energy flow. Developing a harmonious relationship with the Universe we live in, with our birth-place, is a good practice in the healing process.

Color Therapy

The corresponding color for Root Chakra is Red. Wearing red clothes, watching to a red image, maybe a lotus flower image, will help your energetic blockages dissolve. You may also close your eyes &  imagine a Red light charging the Root Chakra. This practice can be productively associated with lighting on a red candle. Eat red foods, apples, strawberries, cherries, red cabbage, anything red helps balance this chakra!

Crystal Therapy

There are several stone types that have a healing effect on the Root Chakra. The original vibration frequency of these crystals help the Root Chakra to realign to the matching frequencies:

  • Azurite
  • Bloodstone
  • Obsidian
  • Golden Yellow Topaz
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Carnelian
  • Citrine
  • Red Jasper
  • Smokey Quartz

Healing Affirmations

We already know the power of spoken words. Several affirmations work like mind setters for the brain, helping your body to vibrate accordingly. Here are some to try:

  • I AM Divinely guided & protected
  • I AM grounded to Mother Earth
  • I AM one with the Universe
  • I AM always taken care of
  • I AM abundance
  • I AM a divine being of light,
  • I AM safe, protected & secure.

Root Chakra Healing

Dissolve your fears & insecurities. Learn self-reliance. The healing affirmations are very helpful in the process of changing your perspective on the insecurities in your live. In addition, you need to assure & reassure yourself that you are OK. That you are safe in this world. Furthermore, working on self-reliance, confidence, perceptions about the resources in your life are the key to healing this first chakra.

Discovering your true needs is the next step in Root Chakra healing. Discovering your true talents and aspirations are results of a meditation habit. When we make Meditation a daily habit, we concentrate the attention on our body, on our thoughts. We are able to observe our mind & ego. When you know what your true needs & aspirations are, you become less influenced by other people’s opinions. Pay attention to limiting beliefs about yourself, & trust the infinite possibilities towards a better life.

When healing the root chakra, it’s important to remember that the outer world is often a reflection of what is happening inside you. Your notion about what it means to be abundant in the material world is affected and affects your notion of inner balance & resourcefulness. In other words, your state of being translates into your ability to manifest in the material world!

Daily practice of meditation on each Chakra will help in keeping the good energy flowing &  will help balance your life in both the physical & emotional aspects.

The time is NOW to heal what is within ~ mind, body & spirit.
